After installation my monitor settings aren't right

Chances are, X wasn't configured correctly during installation. First make sure you have the correct video card and monitor (especially horizontal refresh rate) settings for your computer. Monitor settings can be found at Monitor World.

There are different programs that are distribution specific. Red Hat uses the Xconfigurator program. Some use XF86Setup. Check the installation manuals in the install section of this FAQ.

Before running the program back up the files XF86Config, and if you have it, XF86Config-4 in the /etc/X11 directory. If they are not there run the command
find /etc XF86Config*
